In today's fast-paced world, schools are expected to do much more than teach reading, writing and mathematics. As a kindergarten teacher, I believe that the true purpose of education begins with nurturing emotionally healthy, confident and compassionate children. Child psychology tells us that the experiences children have during their formative years influence their emotional well-being, relationships and decision-making throughout life.

The importance of kindness in school extends far beyond good manners. Kindness helps children build emotional intelligence, develop positive friendships, improve communication skills and create an inclusive classroom where every child feels accepted. When children learn to understand another person's feelings, they naturally become more respectful, patient and supportive.

One memorable experience from my classroom beautifully reflected this. During snack time, one of my students quietly realised that his classmate had forgotten to bring lunch. Before I could step in, three children immediately offered to share their own snacks. One little girl smiled and said, "If we all share, everyone gets to eat." That simple moment spoke volumes. It wasn't the result of a single lesson but the outcome of consistently encouraging kindness through storytelling, role-playing, appreciation circles and everyday classroom conversations.

Children are remarkable observers. They imitate what they see far more than what they are told. When teachers model empathy, celebrate acts of kindness and create opportunities for children to help one another, these behaviours gradually become habits. This is the foundation of social-emotional learning (SEL), where children learn to recognise emotions, build healthy relationships, solve conflicts peacefully and develop resilience.

Research in child psychology consistently shows that emotionally secure children perform better academically, demonstrate greater confidence and adapt more effectively to new situations. A classroom rooted in kindness also reduces anxiety, encourages participation and fosters a genuine love for learning.

As educators and parents, our greatest responsibility is not simply to prepare children for examinations but to prepare them for life. Every encouraging word, every shared toy, every helping hand and every moment of empathy contributes to shaping responsible citizens who value humanity above all else.

When kindness becomes an integral part of a child's everyday learning, success naturally follows. We may teach children how to read books, but kindness teaches them how to understand people and that is a lesson that lasts a lifetime.
